Due to the current unpredictable pandemic situation, we are not scheduling institutes at the moment. These pages list institutes that generally take place once a year. Please register for our newsletter to recieve updates on actual institute dates as they arise.
The Gemeentelijke Muziekschool Bloemendaal lies a half hour west of Amsterdam on the outskirts of Haarlem, just a few minutes' walk from the Overveen train station. Alan Fraser has held an Institute there annually since 2012.
Many relatively inexperienced pianists hesitate to attend an institute, feeling they are not good enough or not well-enough prepared. However, Alan Fraser insists that we are all here to learn and this approach can help all of us, no matter whether our program is well-prepared or in a shambles. Thus the Institute really is open to all interested pianists:

This typical schedule will be modified according to the makeup and needs of the group.

Gementelijke Muziekschool Bloemendaal Korte Zijlweg 9b 2051 BD Overveen (Haarlem)
If you take the train to Overveen, leave the train station, walk back to the railway crossing and cross the tracks heading south. Coninue straight south until you see a large church on the left, a couple of hundred meters past the last small group of shops and restaurants. The next building is a day care center. This is directly in front of the music school. Walk through the courtyard of the daycare and along the passageway to the right of that building. The music school is in behind.
On the western edge of Haarlem, the Muziekschool lies next to a National Park that stretches from there all the way to the North Sea. It is a place of exceptional natural beauty and peace, rich and fertile in its vegetation.
There are several accommodation options in the Bloemendal area which we list here...
• The few hotels in Overveen are rather expensive.
• Your best bet is nearby Haarlem with its many inexpensive hotels, the closest of which is Hotel Carillon.
• For other hotels in Haarlem or Overveen we suggest www.booking.com.
• The nearest Youth Hostel is the Stayokay Haarlem.
• For other youth hostels as well as for another good list of reasonable hotels we suggest www.hostelworld.com.
• www.airbnb.com also offers several listings in the Overveen-Bloemendaal area. Book early to get the best choice and the best price.
MEALS
There are many eateries within walking distance of the music school. In the evenings we generally make reservations for the whole group at the classic old-style Klein Centraal Restaurant so we can get to know each other better. Meal costs are not included in the institute fees.
The active participation fee covers TWO individual lessons, daily group ATM lesson, daily seminar lecture, and observation of all other lessons. Auditors participate fully but receive no individual lessons.
