Amherst, Massachusetts

U. Mass, June 18-25

As Earle Hall, site of the very first Smith College institute in 2011, is not available this year, we are moving up the road to Bezanson Recital Hall at the U. Mass Department of Music & Dance. Bezanson's two fine Steinway D pianos and its stellar acoustics assure an exceptional level of artistic work at this Institute. The Music Department's practice facilities also feature Steinway pianos.

Alan Fraser will baptize our flagship institute's new headquarters with a lecture recital on the Rachamaninoff D minor piano sonata and its connection to Goethe's Faust. He gives the multimedia lecture in the first part of the evening, then plays the mammoth sonata in its entirety after intermission.

This is the only 6-day institute to take place this year anywhere. This length allows a greater assimilation of the ideas and a richer experience both in the student recital and in your ongoing work after the institute's completion. If the 6-day option is too pricey for you, please contact Christine Olson to arrange our economy plan: register for only 4 or 5 lessons spread out over the 6 days.

  • students who wish to improve their sound and agility
  • amateurs who wish to feel more in command of the instrument
  • teachers who want new ways of teaching technique to their students
  • professionals who wish to hone their skills to the highest possible level.
U. Mass Music Department students and staff are welcome to audit the institute at no charge and receive a 35% discount on active participation fees.

Smith College
   The 2016 Class, Smith College

Amherst, Massachusetts with its many interesting eateries and numerous New England wood frame houses offers congenial surroundings for the intense creative atmosphere of the institute. The historical significance of Amherst does not pass unnoticed: the last and largest professional training given by Moshe Feldenkrais took place here, and the Dorothy Taubman Institute was in residence for many summers. We look forward to soaking up the vibes with you in Amherst!

Many teachers in the Amherst area may find it difficult to get away from their studio obligations for the entire week. For them we offer individual lessons on a pay-as-you-go basis. We also encourage them to bring select students for a session or two. The special focus will be on bringing Fraser's new technique strategies to young students, allowing them to improve their sound and agility, advance more quickly and avoid the risk of injury later on. Please contact Christine Olson to arrange these lessons.

This year the Institute starts on a Sunday afternoon and ends on a Sunday morning, allowing participants to avoid weekend traffic coming and going. Your registration packets will be distributed at the opening gathering.

Christine Olson is a pianist and Alexander Technique teacher based in Northampton. Alexander Technique and Feldenkrais Method are like two peas in a pod, so it was natural for her curiosity to be stimulated by Alan Fraser's approach several years ago.
